Get a hygrometer

This is obvious, but buying a hygrometer—a little device that measures humidity as a percent—is the easiest way to measure humidity in your home. Hygrometers are usually quite cheap, and you should be able to find them at your local Walmart, hardware store, or online (like on Amazon).

Simple! In a few hours, you’ll know the precise humidity level in your home and can then make a plan to remedy any issues.

Do an ice cube test

This method is not nearly as accurate or informative. It also depends on the temperature of your home. But if you fill a glass with ice water and wait a few minutes you can check and see if condensation forms on the outside of the glass. Look for other signs

We recently posted about compressors and their function in air conditioners and keeping your house cools during the summer months, but did you know heat pumps use very similar (pretty much identical) technology (just in reverse) to keep you warm all winter?

In this post, we’ll dive in and explain the magic that heat pumps use to keep your home toasty.

Not magic—refrigerant!

Now you might think refrigerant should be a cooling substance (if you’re thinking along the lines of a refrigerator). You’re not alone, and it’s certainly crucial for cooling spaces as well.

However, a better way to think of refrigerant is as a substance that is optimized to transfer heat. It’s so good at its job because in its low-pressure (liquid) state, refrigerant is a cool substance that cools the coils through which it flows and, in turn, cools the air around the coils. On the other hand, when refrigerant is compressed, it turns into a hot gas, which can then be cooled using a fan.

This refrigerant cooling process can either be used to heat or cool your home. If you want you home cold, cool the hot refrigerant off outside and let the heat from the gas blow off into the ether! But if you want to keep your house warm, just do the opposite: blow the heat off with the fan that blows air through your duct works

What is an AFUE rating?

First off, what even IS an AFUE rating? AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, and it measures how efficiently your furnace can convert gas or fuel into heat for your home. AFUE ratings can range from 0% (not efficient at all) to 100% (fully efficient, meaning every bit of energy is converted into heat perfectly). Consequently, a furnace with a 98 AFUE rating will typically save you money over a furnace that clocks an 80 AFUE rating.

An AFUE rating of 80 is the minimum, and furnaces generally cap out at around 98.5% efficiency, meaning SOME energy will always be lost in the combustion process.

What AFUE rating is best for me?

Some HVAC systems are powerful enough to comfortably push air through a MERV 13 filter, which can catch most smoke particles and some bacteria. For other units, such a heavy filter would put unnecessary strain on the system.

Likewise, if you’re totally healthy and don’t have many allergies, maybe you want a MERV 4 filter to keep air moving and to reduce energy consumption caused by your HVAC system working harder to push air through a thicker filter.

Many times, a good middle ground is somewhere between a MERV 8 and MERV 10 filter. Such filters do not overly restrict airflow generally speaking (though to be sure, you should call HVAC pros like ourselves to make sure your unit is powerful enough to handle that MERV rating). But they’re also effective at filtering out many mold spores, pet dander particles, dust mite debris, and other icky stuff you don’t want to breathe regardless of your health!

Last week, we discussed the differences between heat pumps and furnaces. Heat pumps are reverse air conditioners—they suck heat out of the air and pump it into your home. Furnaces are timeless classics—they burn a traditional fuel like oil or gas to generate heat and blow it throughout your house.

But what does this mean for you? Which system will do a better job heating your home on cold nights? How big is your house?

If you’re trying to cool a building larger than 2,500 square feet, chances are good that you just need to stick with central air. Ductless systems are generally a bit less powerful than central AC systems and typically can’t efficiently handle the massive amount of air inside of larger houses and buildings the way a powerful central system can.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and we can’t get too specific without seeing your house, but as a rule of thumb, ductless systems often work best for homes with 2,000 square feet or fewer. For mid-sized to small houses, ductless units can cool things off very efficiently (often more efficiently than central systems).

Do you already have ductwork in your house?

If your building already has ductwork and you just need to install or replace an air handler and a condenser unit, it will probably make sense to stick with the central air conditioning system. Replacing those components is generally cheaper than installing a whole new ductless system

On the other hand, if you’re looking to cool a small to mid-sized house as we discussed above with no existing ductwork, it’ll almost always be cheaper to install a ductless system. It’s a win-win, because ductless units will usually cool slightly more efficiently than central units in limited spaces they’re rated to cool during hot muggy summers around Wendell, Zebulon, and Knightdale, North Carolina.

Do you mind looking at your AC unit?
